As long as I can remember I’ve wanted to see the silver back gorillas in the mountains of Rwanda. My chance finally presented itself in June of this year. I’m a writer and words are my bread and butter but the thrill of being mere feet away from these amazing giants is still hard for me to put into words. I’ve read about how peaceful these primates are and about others encounters with them, but when it was my turn to experience and witness their gentle nature, it was all I could do to hold myself back from reaching out and touching them. Interacting with them is not recommended as humans can pass diseases on. But if one should happen to walk past and touch you, as in my case, the thrill is indescribable!
This beautiful boy was one of three males in his group…and not the dominate male, he was off foraging! He thrilled us for over an hour while he calmly ate leaves and gave us uninterested glances every now and then. I’d recommend this experience to any adventure junkie.
