While touring the river villages in Siem Reap, Cambodia, we came across this boy and his father speeding through the waters. At first the site of the snake hanging around his neck disturbed me but our tour guide explained that his job was very important to the family. The boy’s father brings him around to tourists and charges $2.00 to $5.00 US dollars to have pictures taken with him and his pet.
You might think that giving money to children like this boy will help them out, but begging is discouraged by the Cambodian government. When children are busy making money by begging, they’re not attending school. Which, in the end, is more detrimental to them; without a proper education they have no chance of providing for their future.
