Indonesia is home to many fishing villages. Jang is one such island where the sole source of income for its people is boat building and fishing. Jang is home to hundreds of fisherman and their families and, while on a visit to this tiny Island, I was struck by the people and their gregarious attitudes in the midst of great poverty.
Every person I came across wore a heart warming smile. It was contagious and I couldn’t help feel selfish in some way. Issues like food, clothing, and a safe place to live are problems I don’t even have to think about, yet these people strive for those very things every day. In the midst of all their struggles they offer smiles and generous handshakes to visitors.
This shot was taken on Jang, these children have nothing; no toys, television, or video games, yet they where being silly, laughing, and teasing each other, happy with the life they have. It sure puts things into perspective…doesn’t it?!
