Best Time for an African Safari

The Kruger National Park

This is arguably the best place to see the Big 5 in the wild. The Big 5 are Lion, Elephant, African Buffalo, Rhino and Leopard. The Kruger Park, located in South Africa, is starting to come out of winter in June and July, with August temperatures ideal for game viewing.

Early morning and late afternoon game drives are not nearly as cold this time of the year, an important consideration when exploring the wild in an open top vehicle for several hours at a time. The bush is additionally not as think due to the low rainfall, as summer is the rainy season in The Kruger.

The Great Wildebeest Migration

The Great Wildebeest (Animal) Migration moves in a large clockwise direction from the north of the Serengeti and into Kenya, down to the south of the park and back up. The migration of large herds of Wildebeest and Zebra, followed by many other plains game and their predators, is an incredible movement of animals in search of food. The plains game need greener pastures and the predators need plains game.

This creates a true spectacle to behold but is difficult to pinpoint the exact location, as weather patterns are less than predictable. The best chance you have of seeing this breathtaking sighting is in August, in the north Serengeti. This is the time of year when the Wildebeest are having their babies, and they need to grow a little before making the big journey, providing a perfect window for game viewing.

The large herds of plains game are gathered in one location for the longest duration of the journey and the predators are not far away. This makes for a full safari experience, from birth to the hunt, Predator and Prey, the Wild in action.
