For as long as I can remember I’ve always wanted to experience the beauty and mystery of Rwanda. After seeing the movie “Gorillas in the Mist”, the adventurous part of me longed to encounter the people, food, and of course, the Gorillas hidden in the dewy mountains that call Rwanda home. The chance to explore the remote destination presented itself and some friends and I jumped on it.
1000 Shades of Green Tour and Safari Company was whom we chose to experience our adventures with. Since they highly recommended Mountain Gorilla View Lodge for accommodations, we took their advice, booked our adventure and lodging, packed our bags, and excitedly headed out.
I was like a kid in a candy store…I could barely control my excitement and during the 10 hour flight from Singapore to Johannesburg it was hard to stop myself from asking the flight attendant, “Are we there yet!” every 5 minutes! Catching a connecting flight from Johannesburg to Kigali, Rwanda was torcher but finally we arrived. The wind in my sails were a little deflated when Jackson, the driver who picked me up and turned out to be our guide during the whole week, informed us that it was a 3 hour drive to the remote resort. I sulked for about a second as we started the trip but once I saw how beautiful Rwanda was I quickly changed my tune.
During the drive Jackson explained more about Rwanda and what to expect during our adventures. He giggled as we excitedly told him we wanted to see the baby gorillas. He promised us we would see them and didn’t disappoint!
Mountain Gorilla View Lodge is part of the 3B Hotels group and is located on the foothills of Mount Karisimbi in Northern Rwanda in the town of Kinigi, which is on the edge of Volcanoes National Park. The views from the resort are breathtaking and the resort itself was masterfully designed ensuring the minimum disruption of the surrounding environment, the ecolodge was constructed with local materials and employs local workers.
The lodge consists of 30 unique chalets each with its own fireplace and sitting area. It was wonderful to come back after a day of trekking and have a roaring fire to warm your soar muscles.
Each meal is buffet style with a plethora of choices. Because the hotel uses only locally grown farm-fresh produce, every dish was unbelievably delicious. I found myself looking forward to each meal. One of my favorite items where the massive fresh local avocados. I must have eaten a hundred of them during my stay!
The staff at Mountain Gorilla View Lodge is exceptional. Their genuine desire to ensure visitors have the best possible stay is refreshing. What impressed me the most was the fact that any member of the staff could help you with all your needs. Whether it be asking for extra towels, lighting of the fire in your room, or renting hiking gear, anyone you stopped for inquiry attended to your needs. There was no passing you off to a different department.
True to its name, Mountain Gorilla View Lodge is the home base for trekking up to see the gentle Silver Back Gorillas or Golden Monkeys. During our stay we did both as well as visit a local pigmy village and banana beer factory. (click each to read about my adventures with the gorillas and golden monkeys)
If you plan on visiting Rwanda for any adventure I would highly recommend both 1000 Shades of Green Tour and Safari Company and Mountain Gorilla View Lodge. Their knowledgeable staff and amazing tours will ensure that your adventure is a memorable one. You won’t regret the Adventure and Beauty with 1000 Shades of Green Tour and Safari Company – Rwanda.
